Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva halted a two-fight losing streak and handed Travis Browne his first professional loss in the process with a first-round knockout at UFC on FX 5 at Target Center in Minneapolis on Friday.Silva stunned Browne with a right hand with 1:40 left in the opening round, a shot that crumpled the hobbled Browne. Silva followed with several left hands and then an elbow before referee Herb Dean stopped the fight.
“I trained too much for the first,” Silva said in the post-fight interview. “I came in refreshed.”
Browne appeared to injure his left leg trying to throw a punch midway through the first round. (UFC president Dana White said Browne injured his hamstring.) The injury to Browne limited his mobility. He had been undefeated in his first 14 professional fights.
Silva improved to 17-4 and his victory was his first in the UFC. His UFC debut against former heavyweight champ Cain Velasquez at UFC 146 in May lasted less than a round as Silva’s head was cut and blood gushed into his eyes before he lost via TKO.
“I want to fight Cain Velasquez again,” Silva said on Fuel TV. “The (last) fight was very fast. He cut my head. I need one more opportunity to fight him.”
In the co-main event, Jake Ellenberger earned a unanimous — all three judges scored the three-round bout 29-28 — over Jay Hieron, a decision that avenged a loss to Hieron in the now-defunct International Fight League in 2006.
“I was doing a lot of defense and counter training for this fight,” Ellenberger said. “Jay’s a well-rounded fighter. He is quick, athletic and dangerous. It was hard to come into this fight with a game plan for him. It’s back to training for me and finding ways to keep improving and making adjustments to my game. It does feel good though to get this win.”
Ellenberger (28-6) inflicted a cut on Hieron’s face late in the second round in a fight that lacked many dangerous situations.
The fight marked the first time in seven years the journeyman 36-year-old Hieron (23-6) fought in the UFC.The preliminary fights on Fuel TV lacked one bout: a lightweight fight between Yves Edwards and Jeremy Stephens. Stephens was arrested earlier Friday on a felony out-of-state warrant and remained in custody Friday night, according to the Hennepin County sheriff’s website.
“ I was 100% confident that he was going to get out today and he was going to fight. The problem is, they don’t like this kid in Iowa. They are really going to stick it to him in Des Moines, Iowa, when this kid shows up down there. They are going to extradite him.”White said he initially thought he had a deal to post bail so Stephens could fight, but Iowa authorities changed the terms multiple times.

While some hardcore surfers may criticize this invention and call it cheating, the pros are obvious and surfers will be able to spend more time riding and less time waiting around for waves. Millions of people get steroid shots in their backs to relieve pain. Now they are probably wondering if it’s safe.Hundreds, possibly thousands, of back-pain patients are being warned this week to watch for symptoms of meningitis because of a custom-mixed steroid solution that may have been contaminated with fungus. Five people have died and 42 others have fallen ill.
Doctors who do these injections say they are extremely safe when done correctly with sterile drugs. And many doctors stick to medications approved by the Food and Drug Administration instead of relying on generally less-regulated “compounding pharmacies” like the Massachusetts company implicated in the outbreak.Health videos click here
“If I was a patient, I would definitely be concerned,” said Dr. Michael Schafer, an orthopedic specialist at Chicago’s Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
He said Northwestern gets steroids from federally regulated pharmaceutical companies. And in almost 40 years of experience, he has never had a patient develop an infection from these shots.
He and others say patients should ask their doctors if their medications come from compounding pharmacies, which custom-mix and repackage creams, solutions and other drugs.
In fact, some doctors who rely on such places are rethinking that.
Dr. Michael Drass of Allegheny Pain Management, a clinic in Altoona, Pa., said he has pulled all drugs that came from the New England Compounding Center off his shelves — as the government has urged physicians to do — and is re-evaluating whether to rely on compounding pharmacies for the medicines he uses to treat patients.
“I’ve been doing this for 15 years now, and I’ve done 50,000 injections over that course of time, and I’ve never seen or heard anything like this. It’s a real eye-opener for us in the medical practitioner community,” Drass said.
He said he has relied on the New England pharmacy and others like it because they sometimes have medications he can’t get elsewhere, sometimes because of drug shortages.
Cost can also be a factor. Some of these suppliers charge less than big pharmaceutical companies. Some clinics that use compounding pharmacies say they are a good source of preservative-free steroids, which are less likely to cause a nerve-related complication.
The injections are a common treatment for sciatica, which is pain from a slipped or ruptured disk that often radiates down the legs, and for spinal stenosis, an age-related narrowing of the spine sometimes caused by arthritis. Doctors often recommend injecting steroids into the spinal column for patients who don’t get adequate pain relief from aspirin, ibuprofen or other common medicines that reduce inflammation. The injections also are often used when physical therapy doesn’t work, or for patients whose pain is too great to even try physical therapy or other remedies.
“The worst complication is it may not work,” Schafer said he tells patients.
Patsy Bivins of Sturgis, Ky., is worried about the two steroid injections she got in her lower back in August to treat chronic pain from stenosis and fibromyalgia. She got a call Thursday from the outpatient center where she was treated, warning that she may have been given the tainted drug.
“Before I got the shots I was really suffering,” Bivins said. “It did help some. But now I don’t know what to do.” She added: “When I got the call I thought, ‘Here’s another thing.’ I don’t need nothing else wrong with me, especially that.”
Doctors use a needle about 3 inches long to inject the drug into what is known as the epidural space surrounding the spinal cord.
Patients are typically middle-age or older. Often, three injections are given over a few weeks, in pain clinics, surgery centers or hospitals. Such treatments can cost several hundred dollars and last about 10 minutes, and patients can go home afterward. The effects may last for several months or longer, but patients often return for repeat treatment after a year.
The drug involved in the outbreak, methylprednisolone acetate, is among the steroids commonly used in the procedure. Batches of the drug from other sources have not been implicated so far.
Some patients swear by the treatments, but the scientific evidence is mixed. Some studies have found the injections work no better than dummy medicines, while others have found benefits.
The injections work best for younger patients with fairly recent pain rather than chronic, debilitating pain that has lasted for several years, said Dr. Steven Cohen, an associate professor of anesthesiology at Johns Hopkins medical school.
In the study of nearly 700 women between 70 and 92 years old, 600 were considered to be at high risk for heart disease and stroke. Of these, about 130 women were taking low-dose aspirin when the study began, and nearly 100 more were taking various other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen.
After five years, women who were taking low-dose aspirin showed less decline on a standardized test measuring brain function than women who were not on aspirin. The longer the women were taking aspirin, the more pronounced the differences. Daily aspirin use did not, however, have any bearing on the risk for developing full-blown dementia, the study showed.Must see ,Fat burn
Exactly how aspirin may slow cognitive decline is not fully understood, but it may enhance blood flow to the brain, concluded study authors Dr. Silke Kern and colleagues at the University of Gothenburg.
“Low-dose aspirin treatment may have a neuro-protective effect in elderly women at high cardiovascular risk,” the researchers wrote.
Aspirin may help prevent strokes, and sometimes a series of “mini-strokes” can add up to cognitive decline and even cause dementia, said Dr. Deepak Bhatt, director of the integrated cardiovascular intervention program at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. “It makes sense that this could be the case, but the new study does not prove it.”
“I would not start taking aspirin because of this study,” Bhatt added. Yeast Infection No More!!“This needs to be tested in a larger number of patients before we can say that aspirin has a role in preventing cognitive decline in women or men.”
While the study found an association between aspirin use and mental skills, it did not reveal a cause-and-effect link.
Not everyone can or should take aspirin, Bhatt noted.
“Aspirin can cause side effects and should not be taken by people who are at risk for ulcers or bleeding,” he said. “Do not take aspirin without discussing it with your doctor.”
None of the women in the new study developed ulcers or major bleeds.Still, the study authors concluded: “Longer follow-ups are needed to evaluate the long-term effect of aspirin on cognitive function and dementia.”Dr. Sam Gandy, chairman of Alzheimer’s disease research and associate director of the Mount Sinai Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center in New York City, said: “Aspirin has many properties that benefit the health of our blood vessels. This study shows just how large a role brain circulation plays in maintaining good cognitive function.”

The ankle pick is one of the most versatile takedowns in MMA. If you know the basics of this technique, you can pick an opponent’s ankle from almost anywhere. An ankle pick is an offensive move where a wrestler grabs the ankle of his opponent and pulls it towards his body in an attempt to bring his opponent to the mat. This guide explains the fundamental points of the ankle pick to get you familiar with how the technique works. Follow the steps in this guide to get yourself acquainted with this invaluable move.
Control the Head
The key to an ankle pick is the setup. First, choose which of your opponent’s ankles you are going to pick — the left or right (typically, it’s best to go for the ankle of your opponent’s lead leg).This determines which leg you’ll be focusing on. If you are picking his right ankle, your focus will be on his right leg. With this in mind, follow the next steps closely:
- Start with a collar tie on your opponent.
- Control his head with one of yours arms (it doesn’t matter which) by pulling it towards the bicep of this same arm.
- Using your other arm, grip the triceps or wrist of your opponent’s arm that is on the opposite side of his body in comparison to yours (farthest from you). Stay in a good position with your knees bent and hips back.
- Now, start pulling your opponent’s head down towards the knee of his lead leg.
Lower Your Body
Now, lower your body. Try to force his head past his knee and towards the ankle you want to pick. The closer his head gets to this ankle, the greater your chances are of taking him down. You’ll also want to try to force him to shift his body weight onto the foot of the ankle you want to pick; this is called creating a “heavy foot.” This makes it much more difficult for your opponent to defend against the pick.
Hot Tip: Pull & Pick
The ankle you want to pick may not be forward. If this is the case, snap your opponent down and pull him towards you with a collar tie, and circle away from the leg you want him to put forward. This will force him to bring his trail leg forward in order to keep his balance. Now, the leg you wanted forward is forward.
Step & cup the heel
Take a penetration step towards your opponent, leading with the leg that’s on the same side of your opponent’s body as the ankle you are picking. For example, if you are picking your opponent’s left ankle, step with your right leg. Step next to your opponent’s foot if you can.
Now, drop to your knee and cup your opponent’s heel from the outside of his foot (the outside of his foot should be along the inside of your forearm). You’ll cup his heel with the hand that’s on the same side of your body as the leg with which you took your penetration step — when picking his left ankle, use your right hand.
Make sure you are cupping the very bottom of his heel so that the bottom (side) of your hand and your pinky finger are touching the mat. This will not only help you control his foot better, but it will also force you to get lower so you can complete the takedown. Stay on your knee, and keep your trail leg extended behind you, with your foot in contact with the mat. This will help you pressure into your opponent for the takedown.
Pull & throw the head
The next motions are swift and simultaneous:
- Quickly pull your opponent’s ankle in towards your body. Make sure to have a secure tie on his head and keep your forearm against his collarbone.
- As you are pulling his ankle towards you, use your forearm (of the arm that’s securing the tie) and push his head and upper body away from you. This will completely take away his balance, and drop him onto his back.
There is also a second way to complete the pull:
- Using your forearm that’s on his collarbone and the grasp you have around his head, pull your opponent’s upper body and his ankle in towards your body at the same time.
- Then, continue driving him onto his back.
A tough opponent will belly out when you take away his leg and throw his head. Other wrestlers may stay on their backs. No matter what your opponent does, make sure to cover him and secure the pin with a half-nelson or other pinning combination.
You should now have a better idea about how basic ankle picks work. Practice this technique before moving on to more advanced picks. Once you have mastered this, you’ll be able to pick from underhooks, overhooks, headlocks, and more. Make sure to drill this takedown extensively so you gain an understanding on how to trap and control your opponent’s ankle as well. This move is invaluable at higher levels of wrestling — it’ll make you tough against any opponent. So, get out there and drill it.
Every athlete needs well developed core and stabilization muscles, but perhaps no one needs it more than mixed martial artists. Strength in these areas is an absolute must for mma fighters for several reasons: increased balance, coordination, muscular endurance and stability – all which are very important attributes for mma fighters.
The ability to stay balanced and on your feet, such as BJ Penn’s almost impenetrable take-down defense, when you have strong powerful wrestlers and judo fighters constantly attempting single legs, double legs, and hip throws has a lot to do with how well you have trained your balance and coordination.
Balance and coordination is also the foundation for powerful strikes and take-downs, so developing these attributes in your mma training workouts will not only help you defensively but offensively as well.
The best way to develop your balance and coordination is to include core training and balance training in your mma training workouts.
The core is perhaps the most important part of the body mma fighters must strengthen and develop. The reason being is that the core is the where the body’s center of gravity is and where all movement begins.
That means every punch, kick, take-down, throw, or any other offensive (or defensive) move begins at the core FIRST.
The core is also responsible for stabilizing muscle movement as well as initiate muscle movement. Without getting to much into details, all you need to know at this point is that you sure as hell better be developing your core muscles.
MMA Training Exercises for Developing the Core
Core Stabilization: Any exercise done on the stability ball will automatically develop core stabilization. Example exercises are:
- Stability ball training of all kinds (both core and non-core exercises such as dumbbell shoulder presses)
- Floor Bridges
Vertical Crunches: Any crunch exercise where you are flexing your core in a linear movement. Example exercises are:
- Floor crunches
- Cable crunches
- Leg raises
Twisting Movements: Along with standard crunches and sit-ups, twisting movements are vital for developing power and coordination in any movement that requires twisting your torso, such as punching and kicking. Example exercises are:
- Cable Wood chops
- Cable rotations
- Medicine ball rotation chest passes
- Bicycle sit-ups
Core Power Training: Along with strength, it is important to develop core power, which will contribute the most in increasing power in your strikes. Example exercises are:
- Medicine ball slams
- Sledgehammer training
- Medicine ball pull-over throws from the stability ball
- Medicine ball wood-chops
Balance training is the other half to balance and coordination training. Having good balance will keep you on your feet when it’s needed most, such as Anderson Silva’s going to need going up against Demian Maia next month for UFC 112.
MMA fighters often find themselves in unstable positions more often than not, so training your balance appropriately will ensure you’re comfortable and effective in the ring or cage when you find yourself in these positions.
MMA Training Exercises for Developing Balance
Stabilization Balance: The ability to stay on one leg without losing balance is key. Some example exercises are:
- Standing on one-leg: practice holding your leg straight out
- Single Leg exercise: Have your part attempt to take you down while he has you in a single leg
- Have a partner throw a tennis ball at you while standing on a medicine ball
Balance Strength: Having balance strength is important for movements such as standing back up when you have your opponent’s leg to attempt another single leg. Some example exercises are:
- Single leg squats with the TRX

Balance Power: The ability to be explosive on your feet while still maintaining balance and posture is a must have attribute in mma. Some example exercises are:
